What if weight loss works better as an indirect goal?
What if the goal was becoming the kind of person who has the energy to play with their kids, or carry the food shop like it’s nothing, or spend hours sightseeing on holiday on foot, or simply get up off the floor with ease.
There’s a lot of emphasis on cardio. And there’s a lot of emphasis on lifting heavy. Perhaps because they’re easier to measure than your capacity to handle everyday life.
But for longevity, I think, broadening the goal, should be the goal. Expand your movement capacity by varying how you move.
It could be something as small as changing your hand position… or, if you can, borrowing a drill from a sport you’ve never tried. That way, training becomes more enjoyable.
You move more. You get stronger. You become more active without forcing it. And for a lot of people, weight loss becomes a side effect.
Don’t just train for a lighter body. Train for a bigger life.
